On December 23, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly, through its resolution 49/214, proclaimed August 9th as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. This annual observance honors the rich cultural heritage and contributions of indigenous communities globally. The chosen date, August 9th, marks the anniversary of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and respecting the rights, languages, and traditions of indigenous peoples, as well as promoting their well-being and highlighting their valuable cultural diversity.
